1977 - 1990 B-body LS Accessory Drives

LS front accessory drives for the 1977-1990 box Caprice and Impala. The 1977-1990 B-Body guide says a 98-02 F-Body A/C compressor hits the frame in these cars, so A/C runs on a high-mount bracket. Choose a High Mount A/C drive with compressor, an alternator and power steering drive, or one with the pump.

  • High-mount A/C needed to clear the frame
  • Guide: brackets clear in all 3 spacings
  • Short, Medium and Long versions

Oil pan and header clearances are covered in the 1977-1990 B-Body LS install guide. The crossmember, mounts and headers are on the 1977-1990 B-Body LS swap page.

Box Caprice accessory notes

  • A 98-02 F-Body alternator clears the 1977-1990 B-Body frame with plenty of room.
  • The 98-02 F-Body A/C compressor does not clear, so the guide requires a high-mount A/C bracket there.
  • Per the guide, the A/C and alternator/power steering brackets clear everything in short, medium and long spacing.
  • Coils stay in their stock spot and still clear the factory A/C box and brake booster.

1977-1990 B-Body LS accessory drive FAQ

Can a box Caprice use the 98-02 F-Body A/C compressor location?

No. The 1977-1990 B-Body guide says that compressor does not clear the frame and a high-mount A/C bracket is required.

Does the alternator need a high mount in a 1977-1990 Impala?

The guide says a 98-02 F-Body alternator clears the frame with plenty of room. The high-mount requirement is for the A/C.

Do the Short, Medium and Long drives all fit a box B-Body?

The guide says the A/C and alternator/power steering brackets clear everything in all three spacings. Match the length to your balancer.

Which drive includes the power steering pump?

Only the w/Pump drives. The plain alternator and power steering drives reuse a pump you supply.
