1970-1972 Monte Carlo LS swap fitment notes

  • The frame mounts and outer crossmember brackets use holes already in the Monte Carlo frame, so no frame drilling is needed.
  • The mounts are built around the Moroso high clearance pan, which ends flush with the bottom of the front crossmember. An LH8 pan drops roughly 1.5 inches below it.
  • A 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E, 4L75E or 4L80E goes into the stock tunnel untouched.
  • For a T-56, TR6060, 6L80E, 6L90E or 8L90E, the tunnel is cut, opened, widened at the rear and closed up with a fabricated filler panel. OEM-style carpet still covers it.
  • Plan on high-mount A/C and alternator brackets. Low accessories hit the frame.
  • Header fit assumes a floor shifter. A column shift car needs modified linkage or a cable shifter.
  • You may have to pull the starter, valve covers or spark plugs to get the headers in.
  • The factory clutch Z-bar is not compatible, and the driveshaft may need a different length.
  • Steering keeps full lock-to-lock clearance because the kit is built around the factory suspension and steering parts.

1970-1972 Monte Carlo LS swap FAQ

Will I need to drill the frame on my Monte Carlo?

No. Per the install guide, the frame mounts and the outer crossmember brackets bolt into existing holes in the frame.

What oil pan does the Monte Carlo kit need?

The kit was designed around the Moroso high clearance pan, which stays flush with the front crossmember and helps on lowered cars. An LH8 pan hangs about 1.5 inches lower.

Which transmissions need tunnel work?

Only the T-56, TR6060, 6L80E, 6L90E and 8L90E. The guide shows the cuts and the filler panel, and used a 1967 Chevelle shifter boot and ring from Year One as a template for the shifter hole.

Which fuel tank fits my Monte Carlo?

There is one tank for 1970 and another for 1971-1972, each in standard or notched form. The 255 LPH pump handles up to 550 hp. Go with the 400 LPH pump for a supercharged engine or more power.
